Sea Glass + Sicily
During September 2015, I traveled to Sicily with friends. One of our favorites places was Ortigia Island. It is located across the harbor of Syracuse Sicily and was founded by the Greeks around 700 BC. It is a beautiful, romantic and magical place to visit.
During our visit to Ortigia Island, we came across steps leading down to a rocky beach and to the Mediterranean waters. Of course, we had to explore the beach and dip our toes in the water. It was here on the rocky beach that we discovered that there was sea glass all over the beach and in the water leading up to the beach. There were also pieces of old pottery and old mosaics. We could not believe our luck and collected several pieces.
It was our hope to have the pieces made into jewelry so that we would remember our trip always. When I got back to Atlanta, I searched out an “artist” to make our pieces into beautiful jewelry for me and my friends. I found that special artist, Jamie Jaffe, at Brilliant in Roswell. He attentively listened to my story about the trip and desires to capture our Sicily memories. With great craftsmanship, care and creativity, he turned our beach pieces into works of jewelry art that captured our Sicily moment in time perfectly. I am very grateful.
