Diamond in the Rough
When my great grandmother passed away, she left a diamond ring to my mother and her two sisters. After taking the ring apart and splitting the diamonds amongst the three of them, there was one diamond left which they decided to put away and save for the first girl born. They wrapped the diamond in tissue, sealed it into a small envelope, and put it in a safe that was kept in the family store.
One day, the store was robbed and the safe was stolen. In addition to my great grandmother’s diamond, it also held a large amount of paperwork and some Greek coins. Days later, my grandparents received a call from the police saying that the safe had been found in a nearby field. The contents of the safe had been scattered all over the field but the police collected what they could and asked my grandparents to come to their local station. As they were sorting through the wet papers, they came across a tiny envelope and inside was the diamond – still safely wrapped in the tissue!
When I came along, the first and only girl, the diamond was handed down to me and kept in a safe place until I was an adult. I took it to Brilliant and they set it in a beautiful rose gold setting that I now wear every day! To add a little more meaning to the necklace, my amazing 17 year old dog, Robert, passed away shortly after the necklace was made. Jamie and Katie made a tiny gold disk with an engraved R and attached it to the clasp of the necklace. It sits and the back of my necklace and usually under my hair, but I know it’s there and I love it.
